A teenager fell into a sinkhole on Monday near the Antonio Maceo Polytechnic, also known as Arte y Oficio, in Santiago de Cuba. The incident prompted an immediate response from local rescue teams.

Aris Arias Batalla, the head of Operations and Relief at MINSAP in Santiago de Cuba, shared the details on Facebook, confirming that firefighters from Command 4 (Vista Alegre) and the SIUM team swiftly arrived at the scene to carry out the rescue.

The teenager was transported to the South Children's Hospital in La Colonia for a medical check-up. Preliminary reports indicate that the young individual is not in life-threatening condition, though further tests will be conducted to rule out any internal injuries or trauma.

Coinciding with the first day of the school year, this unfortunate event, which should have been filled with excitement, instead brought about concern. This case is not an isolated incident. A few months ago, another child fell into a deep water hole in a different part of the city, and an emergency rescue operation prevented a potential disaster. In May, a similar situation occurred when two motorcyclists narrowly avoided falling into an open sewage hole in the middle of the street.

Such incidents highlight the daily dangers faced by pedestrians and drivers navigating the deteriorating roads, where sinkholes and leaks pose significant hazards. These recurring episodes expose the severe infrastructure crisis in Cuba and the negligence of local authorities, who have failed to ensure even basic safety in urban spaces.
