Cuban boxer Robeisy Ramírez, a two-time Olympic champion and former professional world titleholder, announced on Monday that he has officially become a citizen of the United States. He celebrated this milestone with a heartfelt message on his social media platforms.

In a Facebook post, Ramírez expressed, "Cuba will always reside in my heart, but today I celebrate and embrace the citizenship of the nation that stands as a beacon of freedom to the world: the United States of America." The boxer shared his aspiration for a day when "every Cuban, whether a boxer, worker, student, or parent, can pursue their dreams without the obstacles or humiliations imposed by a regime that knows only how to oppress and cause suffering to its people."

Reflecting on his humble beginnings on the island and his journey, Ramírez stated, "From a childhood filled with dreams in Cuba, to becoming a double Olympic champion and finding in the U.S. the freedom and opportunity to secure a better future for my family." He concluded with a bold political statement: "Down with the dictatorship and all dictators! God Bless the USA!"

Ramírez is among the many Cuban athletes who have chosen to settle in the United States in search of freedom and better opportunities. This occurs within a context where the Trump administration has maintained a critical stance against the Havana regime, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged for increased international pressure on the Cuban government.

In June, the two-time Olympic champion and former world titleholder recovered from an eye injury that forced him to withdraw from his last match. In 2023, the Cuban boxer recited part of the national anthem following his bout in Japan for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title, where he achieved a decisive victory.

Despite the Castro regime's efforts to prevent the anthem from being played and the national flag from being displayed during the fight, Ramírez aimed to prove that these patriotic symbols transcend any ideology. "To battle, run, Cubans, for the homeland watches you with pride, do not fear a glorious death, for dying for the homeland is living. Homeland and Life and freedom for my Cuba," he declared, still standing in the ring.
