Cuban Man Apprehended in Tapachula for Vandalizing Vehicles and Police Car

On Sunday, a Cuban national was taken into custody in downtown Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, following his involvement in the vandalism of at least four vehicles, including a police patrol car. This incident sparked outrage and concern among local residents.

Witnesses reported that the individual, identified as Rosendo “N”, aged 35, was seen shattering car windows with a large rock on the streets of 13 Poniente and Central Norte, as noted by the local publication, Diario del Sur. Residents themselves apprehended him and handed him over to the authorities, with support from the municipal police.

While being transported to the District Border Prosecutor's Office, the Cuban allegedly caused additional damage by breaking the glass of the official police vehicle. Local sources suggest he may have been under the influence of a substance, although this has not been officially confirmed, according to journalist Julio Navarro Cárdenas.

The victims of the vandalism are demanding that the case be referred to the National Institute of Migration (INM) to determine whether Rosendo “N” has any outstanding arrest warrants and to ensure accountability for the damages inflicted. They are also seeking compensation for the broken windows, which in some instances belong to family-use private vehicles.

Official sources have verified that Rosendo “N” had previously been arrested in Miami in 2022 for committing certain offenses. He remains in the custody of the Chiapas State Attorney General's Office, pending a legal resolution.

This event has reignited discontent in Tapachula, a border city under constant pressure from migration flows. Local residents argue that those accountable for such incidents should not evade justice by citing their migrant status.
