The distinguished Cuban historian, academic, and educator, Eduardo Moisés Torres Cuevas, passed away this Sunday in Havana at the age of 81, as reported by Cubadebate.

Born on September 4, 1942, in Havana, Torres Cuevas began his teaching career as a literacy instructor in the Sierra Maestra during the 1961 literacy campaign. As a Doctor of Historical Sciences and Full Professor at the University of Havana, he taught multiple generations of students.

Throughout his career, he authored around twenty books and numerous articles in both Cuban and international journals. His research primarily focused on the 19th century and the intellectual roots of Cuban nationality. He was regarded as an expert on the work of Padre Félix Varela, having written an extensive biography and edited Varela's fundamental texts.

Torres Cuevas also rigorously examined the ideas of José de la Luz y Caballero, José Antonio Saco, José María Heredia, and Bishop Espada, while providing a deep analysis of Antonio Maceo's contributions to the independence struggle.

Among his most recent works is "History of the Catholic Church in Cuba: The Church in the Creole Homelands (1516-1789)," co-authored with Professor Edelberto Leiva Lajera.

His influence extended beyond academia; Torres Cuevas served as the director of the José Martí National Library of Cuba for over ten years and led the Cuban Academy of History. In 2019, he took on the role of director of the Martiano Program Office and president of the José Martí Cultural Society.

He was a sought-after lecturer at numerous universities across America and Europe, and an active member of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and the Cuban Academy of Language, which positioned him prominently in international historiography.

As a representative in the National Assembly of People's Power from the VII Legislature, he was also part of the State Council. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Order of Carlos J. Finlay, the Frank País Order of First and Second Degrees, the National Social Sciences Award, the National History Award, the Master of Youth Distinction from the Hermanos Saíz Association, and the Félix Varela Prize.
