The discovery of the giant African snail in the La Caridad neighborhood of Camagüey has raised alarms among residents. They are warning about the health risks posed by this invasive mollusk to both humans and animals, as highlighted by independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, based on reports from local inhabitants.

Known scientifically as Achatina fulica, the African snail is recognized globally as one of the most harmful exotic species. It can carry dangerous parasites like Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which is responsible for causing eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in humans.

Experts and officials strongly advise against handling these snails with bare hands and recommend keeping children away from them. In response to the community's alerts via social media, residents are urging local authorities to take immediate action to control the spread of this pest.

"Keep children away. This snail poses a significant health risk as it can transmit dangerous parasites to people and animals," stated Tan Estrada.

The presence of the African snail has already been confirmed in other provinces across the country, posing an additional threat to agriculture by consuming a wide range of crops and severely impacting local production.

Despite the growing concern, Camagüey's health authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter. Specialists emphasize that prevention and proper management are crucial to prevent a larger infestation.

According to comments on Tan's post, the invasion of African snails is also affecting Havana and other provinces. One resident noted that in the Alturas del Casino area of Camagüey, locals have collected up to 300 snails in a single day. When reported to the authorities, they were told there were no resources like salt or lime available to eradicate them. The species has invaded residential yards and even reached a cheese factory.

"They eat mangoes, soursops, leaves—everyone knows the health consequences," one resident warned.
