The long wait is finally over for César Prieto, as his unwavering dedication has earned him a spot in the Major Leagues. On Friday, after a challenging journey spanning four-and-a-half years, Prieto debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals, marking a significant milestone.

Prieto's debut brings the total number of Cuban-born players in the MLB this season to 33, tying a record for the island nation. This achievement was highlighted by journalist Francys Romero, who reported on Prieto's debut. Unfortunately, Prieto struck out in his only at-bat.

Romero, who had the exclusive on Prieto's debut, reflected on the player's journey, noting that the 26-year-old Cuban signed with the Orioles in 2022 after departing from the Cuban national team's training camp in West Palm Beach, Florida, in May 2021. "He has maintained a .293 batting average with 44 home runs over four Minor League seasons. It's a true testament to his perseverance," Romero added.

From Cuban Prospect to Major League Player

In 2021, upon arriving in the United States, Prieto left the Cuban national team during the Pre-Olympic Baseball Tournament held in Florida from May 31 to June 5. This decision rendered him ineligible for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to the Cuban Federation rules, due to his "desertion" from an official delegation.

At that time, Prieto was among the top talents still in Cuba. However, he chose to showcase his skills in pursuit of a professional contract, which he secured months later with the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles subsequently traded him to the Cardinals.

Prieto spent four years as a standout prospect in the Minor Leagues, playing for the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, before receiving his call-up to the majors.
