Maisí's Extreme Weather Event Leaves Families Without Roofs and Crops

On Friday, intense wind gusts swept through the Vertientes community in Maisí, Guantánamo, leading to fallen trees, damaged crops, and significant harm to the roofs of several homes. The official account of Chely Tamayo detailed that this weather phenomenon, occurring Friday afternoon in the cooperative area of La Ceiba, caused severe damage to banana plantations, a crucial crop for the local community's diet.

Numerous families experienced partial roof detachments from their homes, although there have been no confirmed injuries so far. Local residents reported that the winds arrived unexpectedly and with unusual strength, preventing many from taking precautionary measures. One affected household, inhabited by three women, two of whom are incapacitated, has particularly drawn attention for needing assistance.

Municipal authorities have stated that damage assessment teams are currently evaluating the area to quantify the losses and organize recovery efforts for the damaged homes and crops. This climatological event adds to a series of extreme incidents that have recently impacted eastern Cuban communities, already struggling due to economic hardships and a lack of resources to address emergencies.

Earlier this month, another storm resulted in numerous fallen trees, damage to homes with light roofing, and disruptions to electrical and telephone networks. Some structural collapses were reported due to the impact of branches and trunks. These incidents have led to basic service interruptions, prompting a swift response from community service brigades and the Electric Company to clear debris and restore services.
