In an unexpected ceremony on August 6, Roilán Rodríguez Barbán, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, was awarded the "Liberator Cigar" by Yusuam Palacios Ortega, head of the José Martí Cultural Society in Havana. Rodríguez Barbán shared this surprising accolade on social media, thanking Palacios with a quote from José Martí: “All the glory of the world fits in a kernel of corn.”

This event is not a meme. The "Liberator Cigar" is an actual recognition awarded by the José Martí Cultural Society to individuals and institutions that, as per their guidelines, "significantly contribute to fulfilling the organization's objectives."

The story quickly gained traction online, particularly on the platform known as La Tijera, where users labeled it as another instance of state-sponsored propaganda. Many mocked the award's relevance and the symbolic choice of a cigar, considering the severe hardships faced by the Cuban populace.

La Tijera commented, "Amidst the widespread decay of Havana and all of Cuba, the Castro regime continues to honor its loyal officials with awards devoid of social substance. The latest example is the 'Liberator Cigar,' given by the José Martí Cultural Society."

One user noted, "This shows a complete disconnect, as in Cuban slang, a 'cigar' represents a difficult or dire situation. Naming a distinction this way is absurd, inviting ridicule and the sharp humor typical of Cubans."

In April, another absurdity occurred when the regime, out of touch with the nation's realities, celebrated with fanfare the awarding of the replica of Generalísimo Máximo Gómez’s Machete. Once a symbol of the independence struggle, it now serves as a grotesque medal of loyalty to the regime.

This year's honorees included Humberto López, a state media figure known for discrediting activists and independent journalists, Annie Garcés, a young singer famous for her "62 thousand millennia" defense of the regime, and Yusuam Palacios himself.

The stark contrast is undeniable: while some receive ceremonial machetes amidst flowers, uniforms, and flags, hundreds of Cubans languish in prison for simply expressing their views.
