Cuban Activist Supports Family of Orphaned Baby After Mother's Death

In a heartfelt demonstration of support, Cuban activist Ernesto Pérez Rodríguez has intensified his humanitarian efforts for the family of Anderson Matías, a four-month-old baby left without a mother following the tragic death of Lisandra Maceo García. Lisandra passed away due to complications during childbirth, leaving behind not only Anderson but also a seven-year-old daughter, both now under the care of their paternal grandmother.

Pérez Rodríguez, renowned for his charitable work, visited the family in Arroyo Ondo, located in the province of Guantánamo. During his visit, he presented them with a new blender to assist the grandmother in preparing purees for Anderson's diet. "I decided to give them a blender since they didn't have one. It cost 10,500 pesos, and it filled my heart with joy to see the grandmother's smile when she received it," he shared on Facebook.

In a touching gesture of gratitude, the grandmother gifted him a small bag of produce, which the activist described as a testament to her "kind heart and appreciation." "It's incredible how solidarity and love can be passed on, even in times of such sorrow," he expressed.

This donation is just one of several initiatives aimed at helping Lisandra's children. Days earlier, Pérez Rodríguez had delivered multiple packages of 1 kg milk, baby food, and beverages for the young boy, and milk, sweets, and 15,000 pesos for the girl, sent by their paternal grandfather. These contributions helped cover essential needs, including shoes and a school backpack.

Beyond these contributions, Pérez Rodríguez has spearheaded a fundraising campaign to secure decent housing for the children. Following their mother's tragic passing, over one million Cuban pesos (about $2,500) were raised to help purchase a safe and comfortable home for the orphans. However, Pérez Rodríguez is urging small and medium enterprises to assist in converting some of this money into cash, facilitating the purchase of the house and necessary appliances.

The case of Lisandra Maceo García has struck a chord with the Cuban community, both on the island and abroad. At just 26 years old, Lisandra fell into a vegetative state for three months after experiencing a 35-minute respiratory arrest shortly after giving birth. Her health deteriorated beyond recovery, leaving her children in extreme vulnerability, living in a dilapidated wooden house with a dirt floor.

This situation has highlighted the dire state of healthcare and housing in Cuba, where many families struggle to access adequate medical care and dignified living conditions. Lisandra's story has become a symbol of resilience, inspiring many Cubans to join the cause and offer support to the orphans. Thanks to the generosity of Pérez Rodríguez’s followers and the solidarity of the community, Lisandra's children are receiving not only emotional and material support but also a chance to start anew, with the hope that their mother can rest in peace knowing they are well-cared for.
