Wednesday, August 27, 2025 by Elizabeth Alvarado

A Cuban woman suffered severe injuries, and an armed man was killed on Tuesday in an apartment building located in the western part of Miami-Dade, according to authorities. The incident unfolded shortly before 4:00 p.m. at the Monte Carlo Apartments complex, situated at the intersection of Northwest 72nd Avenue and 3rd Street, south of the SR 836 highway, as reported by local media.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) stated that they responded to the scene following numerous 911 calls reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman with gunshot wounds to her upper body. "Officers were able to extract the woman, and rescue teams transported her to the hospital," a spokesperson from MDSO told CBS Miami.

The victim was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, as confirmed by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and several local outlets. Identified by her family as Yudaisy Salgueiro, 47, she is a Miami resident and healthcare professional. Her identity was verified by WSVN, which shared a photo from her Facebook profile indicating she hails from Pinar del Río, Cuba.

Residents directed officers to the apartment where the assailant was located, leading to an armed confrontation. "When they encountered an individual armed with a firearm, a shootout ensued between the suspect and three of our officers," explained Deputy Sheriff Eric García to WSVN.

Following the exchange of gunfire, officers retreated to a tactical position while awaiting the Special Response Team (SRT). Upon entering the apartment, the SRT found the suspect deceased. It remains unclear whether the death was self-inflicted or due to crossfire.

A woman interviewed by Telemundo 51’s reporter, Alexis Boentes, recounted: “Something exploded in the second elevator of the building, the girl came out screaming, and the man followed. It seems he exited the elevator and shot her, then she ran up the stairs screaming for help. That's when gunshots and the sound of breaking glass were heard… but I did see when he shot the girl, and she ran out screaming.”

The witness also mentioned that the two had been in a relationship. Other residents described the chaos within the building. One resident told WSVN, "I saw when he shot the woman and she ran out screaming."

Police closed several streets in the area, including traffic on NW 72 Avenue and Flagler Street, which caused delays on Tuesday afternoon. The community account Only in Dade shared a video on social media showcasing the police operation in the area.

The case is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), as is standard procedure when officers discharge their firearms while on duty.
