The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Friday the arrest of a 46-year-old Cuban national, now listed among the "most dangerous" foreign offenders recently detained in the United States. Bárbaro Reyes-Gómez, a Cuban citizen, was apprehended by ICE's San Antonio office in Texas on August 22, following his conviction for smuggling illegal immigrants in Eagle Pass, a crime for which he served a 13-month prison sentence.

His inclusion in the list known as the "Worst of the Worst" is part of ICE's strategy to spotlight foreign nationals with criminal histories within U.S. borders. The agency emphasizes that these arrests are crucial to "safeguard communities" and reiterates its commitment to prioritizing the removal of individuals with serious criminal records.

Reyes-Gómez's case adds to a series of recent arrests of Cubans across various states, all convicted of high-risk offenses. Through these operations, ICE aims to convey a zero-tolerance message toward criminal behavior within the migrant population.

Ongoing Debate on Migrant Treatment

Although ICE did not specify whether Reyes-Gómez will face deportation or additional charges, his case has reignited discussions on the treatment of migrants, the punitive rhetoric used by immigration authorities, and the dangers faced by thousands of Cubans attempting to reach the U.S. through irregular means, often falling into human trafficking networks.

Additionally, ICE recently announced the arrest of Osmani Mompié, a Cuban national convicted of conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants, during an operation conducted by their New Orleans office. According to official reports, Mompié was detained for his involvement in activities that endangered lives by facilitating illegal border crossings. ICE labeled him as a "criminal" and warned that anyone in such a position should "expect to be arrested."
