Enrique Pérez Fumero, a young journalist who suffered a violent attack in Santiago de Cuba in early August, remains in a fragile state as he undergoes his recovery process in the hospital. After undergoing two surgeries, his condition is still critical.

In the latest update, Víctor Hugo Leyva, president of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), shared some encouraging news on Wednesday despite the serious condition of Pérez Fumero. "He has been fever-free for 48 hours, is eating better, and his vital signs are stable," Leyva reported.

Additionally, Leyva noted that "the surgical wound is healing well," and while Pérez Fumero remains in critical condition, these are "positive signs," allowing for cautious optimism. He emphasized the journalist is under "constant surveillance," highlighting both the complexity of the case and the medical attention he is receiving.

Although Leyva has been unable to visit the hospital personally due to work commitments, he has maintained direct communication with the medical team overseeing Pérez Fumero's care.

Progress Since August 17

Earlier updates have indicated a slow yet steady recovery for Pérez Fumero, who has undergone two surgeries since the attack. On August 17, Leyva reported that the journalist was "generally stable within his critical condition." Although he faced "fever syndromes," they were "controlled with treatment." Neurologically, he was stable, and there was an ongoing search for "the best medication alternatives" with "constant monitoring of his progress."

On August 18, updates showed progress. "He remains neurologically stable, with no complications. The fever has decreased. The surgical wound is healing well," detailed Leyva. His vital signs were normal, and his clinical behavior was positive: "he communicates and is cooperative." That day, a "change of antibiotics to the latest generation medications" was implemented while monitoring for potential complications due to his "prolonged hospital stay."

By August 19, stability continued, albeit without significant changes. The journalist was "stable in his critical condition," capable of maintaining "minimal dialogue." He did not have a fever in the previous 24 hours and continued on "broad-spectrum antibiotics that do not need modification at this time." His vital signs remained "normal," with "constant surveillance" reiterated.

A Critical Situation with Encouraging Signs

The detailed report from August 21 reinforced a moderately positive recovery trend. Going 48 hours without a fever and improved nutrition are clinical signs of recovery, yet he remains labeled as "critical." The healing of the "surgical wound" is crucial in this process, along with ongoing neurological evaluations.

The second surgery, conducted at Saturnino Lora Hospital, was part of the treatment for the severe cranial injuries sustained during the assault. The first surgery, following an MRI in Las Tunas, already highlighted the complexity of his condition. Pérez Fumero, a Doctor in Communication Sciences, radio producer, and university professor, was brutally attacked on the morning of August 3, reportedly to steal his shoes, cell phone, and wallet. There is suspicion of a homophobic motive behind the attack.

The incident shocked the city and the journalism community, occurring amid rising violence in the country. While family, colleagues, and citizens demand justice, authorities have not provided details on the investigation or any arrests related to the attack. To date, the assailants of Enrique Pérez Fumero have not been identified or apprehended.
