Shark Bites Fisherman in Florida, Sends Him to Hospital -- A Fishing Trip Turns Dangerous

Tuesday, August 19, 2025 by Oscar Fernandez

What started as a casual evening of fishing among friends turned into a life-threatening ordeal for Shawn Meuse, a fisherman bitten by a shark while posing for a photo in Boca Grande, Florida. The incident unfolded Saturday night when Meuse and his friends caught a nearly two-meter lemon shark. After removing the hook and preparing to release it, the shark suddenly turned and bit him on the leg.

"We had just taken the hook out of its mouth. We were going to release it, but the shark turned and bit me," Meuse recounted to Wink News. The bite was severe enough that those present had to quickly make a tourniquet while calling 911 for help. Boca Grande firefighters arrived and airlifted him to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers.

Meteorologist Matt Devitt shared the video of the attack on social media, cautioning viewers about the graphic nature of the footage. "Shark bites a Florida man on the leg after being reeled in while fishing in Boca Grande over the weekend. The injury was severe enough to require hospital transport," he wrote.

Despite the incident, Meuse remained surprisingly upbeat from his hospital bed. "I'd go back today if I could get out of the hospital. It's unfortunate, but that's something that happens when you're out there; sometimes it just happens. Luckily, it only took a little bit, not much. So, you know, I'm one of the lucky ones. And, you know, I'm a shark bite survivor. Lots of good stories now," he said with a chuckle. He even left a message for the shark: "Until next time."

Shark-Infested Waters

Fire Chief C.W. Blosser noted that shark presence in Boca Grande increases during tarpon season and advised caution for both fishermen and swimmers. "I've never seen anyone, specifically fishing for a shark, get bitten. You have to be careful when dealing with Mother Nature," he cautioned.

Meuse's case is not an isolated incident. Just two months ago, a nine-year-old girl was attacked by a shark while swimming in the same area. This weekend's attack is the third recorded since Blosser took over as chief 16 years ago, reports the Fort Myers News-Press.

Blosser emphasized that in the event of a bite, the most important steps are to move away from the animal, apply pressure to the wound, and immediately call 911.
