Sunday, August 17, 2025 by Robert Castillo

A violent altercation involving knives occurred near the Barca de Oro park in Santiago de Cuba's José Martí district, leaving two people injured and causing significant concern among local residents. According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta, the incident took place outside a cell phone repair shop when Yasmani Ojeda Cobas demanded a refund of 4,000 pesos from Yorkis Leer Ruiz, known as "Chiquitico" or "El Menor," for a cell phone component allegedly stolen.

The device was locked, and although Chiquitico initially promised a replacement, he later refused to return the money. The confrontation escalated to physical violence, with witnesses reporting that Chiquitico attacked Yasmani once more. In defense, Yasmani grabbed a knife from a nearby table, injuring Chiquitico in the chest and arm.

Yasmani also sustained injuries, suffering a leg wound and a dislocated arm, and was taken to Joaquín Castillo Duany Military Hospital, where he received medical attention and is not in life-threatening condition. An alternate account suggests the fight began when Chiquitico slapped Yasmani during an attempted discussion. Onlookers, including a man known as "Pipo," assisted the injured individuals until medical help arrived.

The cell phone repair shop owner clarified in the comments section that the incident was unrelated to his business services and was unaware of the conflict between the individuals involved. The community remains unsettled, awaiting official updates on the health status of those involved and any potential legal actions.

Residents expressed regret that the lack of a peaceful resolution led to such violence, which could have had fatal consequences. This incident is part of a disturbing trend of increasing violence in Santiago de Cuba in recent weeks, resulting in several fatalities and serious injuries across various neighborhoods.

Recent events include a street party in Reparto Vista Hermosa that ended tragically. There, two young men with a history of conflict encountered each other, and one decided to "settle the score," leading to the fatal incident.

As outrage grows on social media and in the streets, many question how many more lives must be lost before effective measures are implemented to curb the rising crime wave.
