Miguel Díaz-Canel Villanueva, son of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, was part of the official delegation that traveled to Venezuela for the celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Fidel Castro. The event, led by Nicolás Maduro, was captured in images broadcasted by Telesur. The young musician was seen seated next to the Venezuelan president, surrounded by other Cuban officials, and was introduced solely as "Miguel Díaz-Canel son."

The presence of Díaz-Canel Villanueva at this political gathering has sparked criticism on social media. Many are questioning whether he attended in his capacity as a musician or as an official representative, as well as raising concerns about the use of state funds for his travel amidst Cuba's ongoing economic crisis.

Journalist José Raúl Gallego criticized the role of the president's son, highlighting that public money is used for "the kids' trips and Machi's handbags" instead of essential needs like medicine, fuel, and food for the Cuban people. He sarcastically remarked on his X profile, "Remember this next time they take Canel's son and his band to 'perform' in your province."

Leading the D’Cuba music group and a member of the Hermanos Saíz Association, Díaz-Canel Villanueva has been involved in tours and events with young artists across various Cuban provinces. However, he does not hold any official political position on the island.

During a visit to Camagüey in August 2023, he urged efforts to "work" to "save the arts" and "use it for the country's growth." These statements contrast sharply with the ongoing reports of censorship and repression faced by independent creators in Cuba.

The visit to Venezuela underscores the tight political alliance between Havana and Caracas. Nicolás Maduro utilized the occasion of Fidel Castro's birth anniversary, who would have turned 99 on Wednesday, to reaffirm the bond between his regime and the Cuban dictatorship. The Venezuelan leader emphasized that both nations should be "more united than ever" in their fight against what he described as the "supremacists of the Yankee empire."

The involvement of a direct family member of the Cuban leader in an official event has been perceived by critics as another instance of nepotism and privilege within the Cuban elite.
