Dr. Francisco Durán Highlights Ongoing Dengue Transmission in Seven Cuban Provinces

Thursday, August 14, 2025 by Hannah Aguilar

Dr. Francisco Durán, the national director of Epidemiology at Cuba's Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), offered an update on the island's epidemiological status this Wednesday. Despite some stability, active outbreaks of arboviruses such as dengue, Oropouche virus, and chikungunya continue to pose a challenge.

In his televised appearance, Dr. Durán pointed out that dengue is actively spreading across seven provinces and eight municipalities, with the recent addition of the municipality of Martí in Matanzas province. Meanwhile, Oropouche cases have been identified in 11 provinces, 23 municipalities, and 28 health areas, though severe complications have not yet been observed.

"The clinical manifestation of Oropouche is generally not severe, but we must remain vigilant," Dr. Durán cautioned. He emphasized that this virus is carried by mosquitoes and midges, including the Culex quinquefasciatus, a challenging vector to control due to its ability to thrive in stagnant water.

Regarding chikungunya, transmission persists in two districts within the Perico municipality in Matanzas. According to MINSAP, there have been no reports of severe cases or significant complications, with joint pains being the most common symptom.

Currently, patients are hospitalized due to dengue risk, including one severe but non-critical case from Santiago de Cuba.

Disease Stability Amidst Adverse Weather

Dr. Durán reported that despite the season's warm and rainy weather, there has not been a noticeable increase in respiratory illnesses or acute diarrheal diseases, which are endemic in Cuba. Circulating respiratory viruses include influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, but no concerning spikes have been observed.

While the general situation appears stable, the expert urged continued commitment to health prevention measures, particularly regarding safe water consumption, food hygiene, and wearing masks in crowded settings.

He also underscored the importance of COVID-19 vaccination, especially booster shots for individuals over 65 and vulnerable groups such as diabetics, those with hypertension, obese individuals, and healthcare workers.
