Youth Conflict in Santiago de Cuba Leads to Stabbing Incident

Wednesday, August 13, 2025 by Sophia Martinez

The city of Santiago de Cuba witnessed another bloody incident on August 12, when a street party in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood ended in violence. Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the altercation took place on Calle G, between 6th and 5th Streets, during a "pumpum"—a local term for an impromptu street gathering or party.

The tragic event unfolded when two young men with longstanding grudges encountered each other, and one opted to settle the score. The victim, Yoan Aguilera, aged 19, suffered a fatal stab wound allegedly inflicted by another youth known as Yunior. "He's probably dead. I was there and he dropped like a stone," a witness told Mayeta Labrada.

Aguilera was rushed to Joaquín Castillo Duany Military Hospital, but early reports circulating online are grim as the community awaits official confirmation of his condition.

Escalating Violence in Santiago de Cuba

This incident is part of a growing wave of violence that has gripped Santiago de Cuba in recent weeks, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries in various neighborhoods. One recent tragedy involved a father of two young children who was fatally stabbed in the heart during a summer party. Witnesses recounted that a disagreement quickly escalated, ending when the assailant, still at large, delivered a deadly blow.

Meanwhile, another young man, Yudel Vegue Kindelán, was stabbed twice—once in the neck—in the Nuevo Vista Alegre neighborhood, leaving him in critical condition and under intensive care.

Community Outcry and Lack of Police Presence

Most of these attacks have occurred during neighborhood celebrations or public events that lack police presence or preventive measures, which residents find alarming. Citizens have criticized the authorities for their inaction and slow response, which only adds to the feeling of vulnerability among the populace.

As outrage grows both on social media and in the streets, many are asking how many more lives need to be lost before effective measures are implemented to curb the rising tide of crime.

For now, investigations remain ongoing, and Santiago de Cuba stays on edge, caught in an unrelenting cycle of violence.
