Severe Flooding Strikes Havana Amid Intense Rainfall

Wednesday, August 13, 2025 by Daniel Colon

The torrential downpours on August 11 once again tested Havana's resilience against extreme weather conditions, resulting in flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and inundated homes throughout the city. Reports from Cuban Meteorological Radar indicate that a widespread system of storms and heavy rains primarily affected western Cuba, with Havana bearing the brunt of the impact.

The downpour, coupled with electrical storms, caused significant flooding in low-lying areas with poor drainage, such as Vía Blanca, Vento-Lacret, and Avenida del Puerto. In these areas, a bus was left immobilized despite the presence of firefighters. Videos shared by locals and independent media outlets, like El Toque, depict streets transformed into rivers, water invading homes, and pedestrians navigating treacherous currents.

Witnesses have reported that some jeep and bus drivers risked crossing flooded zones, endangering their lives and those of others. Amid this crisis, social media buzzed with reports of a tragic incident in the El Cerro municipality, where a five-month-old baby reportedly died after a wall collapsed and water rushed into their home. The child's mother was allegedly gathering her belongings when the tragedy occurred, although official or familial confirmations have yet to surface.

This week's rain adds to a series of incidents that have battered Havana in 2025. Back in April, a sudden downpour submerged much of the city within 40 minutes, severely affecting neighborhoods like Centro Habana, Cerro, and areas near the Malecón. In June, another storm flooded Vedado streets, once again highlighting the inadequacies of a drainage system that cannot withstand even moderate precipitation.

Earlier in February, the city was shaken by tragedy when a child in Luyanó lost their life after being swept away by a storm drain during a flood, prompting numerous complaints about uncovered drains and sewers across the Cuban capital. With experts predicting a "very active" hurricane season, featuring a high likelihood of tropical storms and intense rainfall events, Havana's populace faces vulnerability due to a failing drainage infrastructure that continually collapses under pressure.

On social media, users urge extreme caution, advising against wading through flooded areas and warning against underestimating the risks involved.
