Cándido Fabré Criticizes Comparisons: "Don't Compare El Bebeshito to Benny Moré, Celia Cruz, or Ismael Rivera"

Tuesday, August 12, 2025 by Ava Castillo

On Monday, Cuban musician Cándido Fabré addressed the controversy sparked on social media after producer Roberto Ferrante dubbed El Bebeshito a "great Cuban artist." In a Facebook post, Fabré issued a direct response to those attempting to equate the reggaeton artist with iconic figures in popular music.

"I just read the most disrespectful comment of my life on social media," Fabré began, emphasizing that while he acknowledges the success of the urban artist, he strongly opposes comparisons that place him on par with or above titans like Benny Moré, Celia Cruz, or Ismael Rivera.

The seasoned composer and singer recalled his early support for El Bebeshito when others predicted his failure. "I'm glad. I backed him when another wave predicted his failure in the Miami stadium. I wrote a song: El Bebeshito la pega toa, and he filled the place, rocked it, and continues to resonate," he wrote.

However, Fabré clarified that his support does not mean endorsing comparisons with artists who, in his view, transcend time and trends: "But not to compare him, and certainly not to place him above Benny Moré, Celia Cruz, Ismael Rivera... they are unforgettable, transcending borders, cultures, and languages."

Fabré expressed his hopes for the young reggaeton artist's success in the industry: "Hopefully, our BB will establish himself, and history will grant him a line in the book of immortals, who are beacons, lights, and guides of Latin American popular music."

Nevertheless, he insisted, "I demand respect for the world's greats. Don't confuse them. They are not trends, they are eternal, like the Beatles."

His statements come amid an ongoing debate that has generated numerous reactions on social media and in the media. The spark was Ferrante's assertion that, in recent interviews, he defended El Bebeshito as a "great Cuban artist" and celebrated his impact on the urban genre.

This comment triggered a flood of responses, both supportive and critical, quickly reminding people of historical figures such as Moré, Cruz, Rivera, and other legends of Latin music.

In recent days, several articles and analyses have explored Ferrante's career, El Bebeshito's rising trajectory, and the controversy over how achievements in current music are measured against the indelible mark left by the greats.

Fabré, with over four decades of experience and recognition as one of Cuba's most prolific improvisers—also known for his adherence to officialdom—has made it clear that, for him, artistic history and eternity are not granted by fleeting trends but by a body of work that transcends generations.
