Cuban TikToker's Bold Response to Xenophobic Comment in Spain Goes Viral

Monday, August 11, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

Cuban TikTok creator @carmen03876, known as Carmendelis, recently posted a video countering a xenophobic remark left on one of her previous uploads where she was dancing. The comment read, "While Latinas dance on TikTok, Spanish women work so Latinas can get their benefits." In response, Carmendelis asserted, "I've been working since I arrived two years ago," emphasizing that she'll leave Spain "on my own terms, not when someone else wants me to." She clarified that she came as a "Spanish citizen" through her grandfather, who emigrated to Cuba "on an illegal ship," yet declared, "I don't consider myself Spanish; I am Cuban. Kisses and take care."

The video has garnered over 8,600 likes and 3,700 comments, featuring supportive messages such as "We are here representing our homeland" and "Friend, represent your land with strength and courage." Some urged avoiding confrontations: "There will always be unscrupulous people, both in Spain and in any other country. It's better to make good friendships."

The initial comment that triggered her response was posted on an earlier video where Carmendelis was dancing, and she addressed it in her latest video. Recently, other Cubans in Spain have also taken to TikTok to challenge stereotypes and share their stories. @el.profesor.cubano shared thoughts on the freedom of choice in Spain compared to state control in Cuba, Walkys listed seven surprises upon arrival, and Sairis Castillo celebrated renting her first home in Gran Canaria after emigrating alone.

Cubans abroad frequently encounter criticism for their accent or language, but many lean on their cultural heritage to preserve their identity and tackle the hurdles of migration. The migrant experience often strengthens the Cuban identity among emigrants, who steadfastly defend their roots despite adapting to a new environment.
