Saturday, August 9, 2025 by Samantha Mendoza

At the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César South Pediatric Surgical Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, medical staff and family members came together to celebrate the 15th birthday of Lilianne, a young girl battling cancer in the mediastinum, the central area between the lungs. Held amidst her ongoing treatment, the celebration aimed to uplift her spirits and foster an emotional environment conducive to her healing, as reported by the state-run TV Santiago.

Despite being hospitalized for nearly two months, Lilianne expressed her joy in sharing this significant milestone, albeit with the constraints of her health condition. "Today, I feel very good with all the people who have come to see me. My greatest wish on this day is for good health for me and my entire family," she said tearfully.

The event featured heartfelt moments with her parents and siblings, along with affectionate gestures from the medical team, who emphasized the importance of emotional support alongside medical treatment. "Making her happy, seeing her laugh, which she hadn't done in a long time, has been something great and wonderful," her mother shared, recounting the challenging journey they've endured over the months. "We've spent very intense days here at the hospital, many days in therapy, many complications, but thank God, today I can say she reached her 15th birthday happily," her mother concluded, visibly emotional.

The healthcare team highlighted that, despite the therapy complications and intense days of hospitalization, the day was an emotional triumph for Lilianne and those around her: "What we all wish is for children to be very happy, and today we achieved that."

Thousands of cancer patients in Cuba face serious obstacles in receiving treatment due to a shortage of medications and specialized equipment. The lack of cytostatics and adequate resources prevents many from accessing timely chemotherapy or surgery. Although the government has pledged to improve conditions, patients and their families often seek care abroad due to the lack of immediate solutions.

The Cuban regime acknowledges the crisis but largely blames the U.S. embargo for these issues, avoiding self-criticism regarding internal inefficiencies or corruption within the system.
