Otaola Stands by Willy Chirino: Criticizing Him Is an Attack on Cuban Exiles

Friday, August 8, 2025 by Hannah Aguilar

Alexander Otaola, a notable presenter and activist, has stepped forward to defend Willy Chirino following a surge of criticism stemming from an interview. In the interview, Chirino voiced concerns about President Biden's immigration policy, drawing parallels between the current border crisis and the Mariel Boatlift of 1980. “Criticizing Willy Chirino equates to attacking the Cuban exile community,” Otaola declared in a video, pointing fingers directly at the Democrats, led by political strategist Sasha Tirador, for attempting to undermine the artist for speaking what he considers inconvenient truths.

During his conversation with broadcaster Enrique Santos, Chirino described the situation at the U.S. southern border as a "disaster" and accused President Joe Biden of allowing millions to enter the country unchecked. He likened this to Fidel Castro's actions during the Mariel Boatlift, saying, "In 1980, Castro opened prisons and mental institutions," he recalled.

Otaola staunchly supported each of the singer-songwriter's claims, questioning, “Where's the lie in what Willy said?” He argued that the issue transcends ideology and is a matter of national security: “This isn't about Trumpism; it's about common sense.” Otaola went further, accusing critics of trying to “whitewash communists” and perpetuating “Democratic lies.” He believes Chirino's remarks are a legitimate concern for the country's future and citizens' safety, warning, “Don’t mess with Willy, or us. Take on us instead.”

Amid the controversy, Enrique Santos also defended the singer. Although he admitted not agreeing with all of Chirino's statements, he insisted on respecting his right to voice his opinion: “My affection and respect for Willy Chirino remain unchanged,” Santos remarked, highlighting the artist's legacy as a symbol of the Cuban exile.

The debate has sparked mixed reactions. Some on social media accuse Chirino of "echoing Trump propaganda" or forgetting his own immigrant roots, while others commend him for candidly addressing topics they see as taboo.

In the same interview, Chirino praised the contributions of immigrants to American society: “The U.S. has thrived because of Latin American immigration, which has taken on jobs no one else wants,” he stated, noting his own story as part of this hardworking community.

This ongoing discussion highlights the increasing polarization around U.S. immigration policy and the internal divisions within the Cuban exile community.
