Francisco Durán Addresses Cuba's Epidemiological Situation

Thursday, August 7, 2025 by Oscar Guevara

Francisco Durán García, the National Director of Epidemiology at the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), appeared on Cuban television this Wednesday to provide his routine weekly update on the island's current epidemiological landscape. Dr. Durán García highlighted that dengue remains the most challenging arboviral disease circulating in the country and urged individuals to seek medical attention if they experience any feverish symptoms.

He reported that there are currently two individuals with severe cases of dengue, though he did not disclose the province where these patients are located or provide further details about their condition. "Anyone experiencing a fever should not be complacent; visit your doctor to determine the appropriate course of action," he advised.

Dengue is currently present in six provinces, seven municipalities, and seven health areas. Meanwhile, the Oropouche virus shows a broader presence, confirmed in 11 provinces, 23 municipalities, and 28 health areas. Despite its wider spread compared to dengue, this virus typically presents less severe symptoms.

Dr. Durán García also mentioned the presence of Chikungunya, which remains active in two communities within the Perico municipality in Matanzas. This disease also causes fever accompanied by severe joint pain, particularly in the ankles and knees, but rarely leads to serious cases.

Lastly, Francisco Durán downplayed the growing concern on social media about a potential rise in a new COVID-19 variant. He denied reports of "overwhelmed hospitals" due to coronavirus in Cuba, reiterating that there is no significant increase in cases, although he did not provide specific numbers.

In his most recent statement, Dr. Francisco Durán García continued his usual approach of minimizing the real impact of Cuba's epidemiological situation, dismissing public concerns despite the numerous active outbreaks across the country. His remarks are in stark contrast to the reality faced by many areas, where fumigation has been absent for years, street and public space cleanliness is inadequate, and conditions conducive to vector proliferation persist, facilitating the spread of diseases like dengue, Oropouche, and chikungunya.

Understanding Cuba's Current Epidemiological Challenges

What are the most prevalent diseases in Cuba currently?

Currently, dengue is the most challenging arboviral disease in Cuba, followed by the Oropouche virus and Chikungunya, which are also present in various areas.

How is the Cuban government addressing the dengue outbreak?

Dr. Francisco Durán García advises individuals with fever to seek medical attention. However, there are reports of deficiencies in public health measures, such as fumigation and sanitation.

Is there a significant rise in COVID-19 cases in Cuba?

According to Dr. Durán García, there is no substantial increase in COVID-19 cases, and he dismissed claims of overwhelmed hospitals. However, no specific data was provided.
