Esteemed filmmaker and social activist Lizette Vila fell victim to a burglary at her residence in the Nuevo Vedado neighborhood of Havana, occurring in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to a Facebook post by communicator Sergio E. Cabrera, one or possibly two intruders infiltrated the property—located at Calle Norte #44 between 35 and 36—and made off with several valuable items.

The crime was promptly reported to the authorities, who dispatched law enforcement officers to the scene. In the days following the incident, Cabrera, with permission from Vila and her family, revealed that fortunately, everyone involved was physically unharmed, though emotionally shaken by the uncertainty and fear such events can cause.

The statement further highlights the sense of vulnerability felt due to these crimes, urging a defense of the citizens' right to peace, and noting the lack of an official response from the authorities regarding the case. Born in Havana in 1949, Vila is a prominent figure in the island's artistic scene, celebrated for her work in film, TV, and video documentaries, as well as her role as a musical advisor.

Surge in Thefts

Recently, news emerged of several cell phones being stolen on a single P-11 bus route heading to Alamar in Habana del Este, resulting in one man's arrest. Ironically, the stolen phones remained unrecovered.

The incident took place shortly before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29. A search of all passengers was conducted after the bus was halted at the Cuba and Chacón station in Old Havana. By approximately 2:30 p.m., the inspection concluded, allowing passengers to reboard and proceed with their journey. Despite the detention of one suspect, the stolen items were not found.

Additionally, on the previous Monday, a 26-year-old man named Edrey Copello, residing on Calle 12 de Chicharrones, was apprehended by Reparto Sueño residents in Santiago de Cuba while allegedly attempting to snatch belongings from a person in broad daylight.
