A man was apprehended at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities discovered he was carrying a fully loaded AR-15 rifle, several knives, and a small amount of cocaine. The arrest occurred on Wednesday morning when airport staff notified the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office about suspicious activity near a vehicle in a restricted parking area.
Deputies responded and found 41-year-old Michael Rodrigues changing clothes next to a dark-colored rental car. When asked for the rental agreement, Rodrigues opened the glove compartment, revealing a magazine filled with AR-15 rifle ammunition. Further inspection uncovered the loaded rifle and knives hidden under a blanket on the vehicle’s seat.
"This situation had the potential to be very serious, potentially endangering many lives. Fortunately, thanks to the swift and professional action taken by airport staff and deputies, the suspect is now in custody," stated a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, praising the quick response of the personnel involved.
Rodrigues was taken into custody without incident and is currently being questioned by detectives. Authorities confirmed that he has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for domestic violence by strangulation, burglary, possession, and trafficking of stolen property, among other serious offenses.
In addition to facing charges for possession of firearms by a convicted felon, Rodrigues is also charged with unauthorized entry into an operational area of the airport and possession of cocaine. He was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail as investigations continue.
Florida is a leader in concealed carry licenses due to its large population and high demand, with 186,435 license holders in Miami-Dade County. Although a law allowing permitless carry was passed in 2023, many citizens still choose to obtain a license for safety and responsibility reasons. The permitless carry law, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2023, has sparked heated political debate. While Republicans advocate for gun rights, Democrats and safety activists highlight the risks, citing tragedies like the Parkland and Pulse nightclub shootings. Despite the new law, millions continue to pursue obtaining licenses.
