Tuesday, August 5, 2025 by Edward Lopez

Following a severe accident in the early hours of Sunday on the Bayamo–Las Tunas highway in Granma province, ten individuals are currently admitted at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial Hospital. Among those hospitalized, four are in critical condition and six are under medical observation, including a 10-year-old girl.

Yudelkis Ortiz Barceló, the First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Granma, provided this update to state-run media. She assured that every injured individual is receiving specialized care at the hospital in Bayamo. "All are under the meticulous care of our healthcare staff," she stated, adding that 16 patients have been discharged, with most being transferred to Santiago de Cuba.

Both provincial and national authorities have expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz urged Cuban drivers to "exercise extreme caution on the roads."

The tragic incident resulted in two fatalities and 27 injured. It occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. at kilometer 727 on the Bayamo–Las Tunas route. A bus, rented by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC) of BioCubaFarma and traveling from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, lost control and collided with a fixed object.

One victim died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries in the hospital after being urgently transported along with the other injured passengers. Dr. Adonis Frómeta Guerra, the hospital's general director, confirmed that six patients required surgery and assured that the facility possesses the necessary medical staff and resources for specialized care.

Survivors, including Yori Andino, director of the Dolores Concert Hall, recounted the terrifying ordeal. On social media, she shared how, amidst chaos and darkness, her sole focus was on saving her daughter. "It was imminent that this would happen," she wrote, also criticizing reckless driving prior to the crash.

Authorities are investigating the causes of the accident and have reiterated the call for heightened road safety measures.
