The National Hurricane Center (*NHC*) announced early Monday morning the emergence of Tropical Storm Dexter in the western Atlantic. In its initial message on social media, the agency stated, "Tropical Storm Dexter has formed over the western Atlantic. The forecast suggests it will steer clear of the U.S. coastline and head north of Bermuda." Several hours later, the NHC reiterated, "Dexter is expected to remain away from the U.S. coast and north of Bermuda," indicating the storm poses no immediate threat to land.

According to the advisory issued at 5:00 a.m. Atlantic Time, Dexter's center was positioned at 34.6 degrees north and 68.3 degrees west, approximately 415 kilometers northwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and stronger gusts. The storm is moving east-northeast at 19 km/h and is anticipated to increase its speed in the coming hours.

In a subsequent update, the NHC clarified that no coastal warnings or watches were in effect and predicted a slight strengthening before Dexter transitions to a post-tropical system by Wednesday. Tropical storm-force winds extend up to 185 kilometers from the center.

Dexter marks the fourth named storm in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist from Colorado State University, noted that this system formed earlier than the historical average, which typically sees the fourth storm by around August 15. "No hurricanes have developed so far this year," he added.

This development follows a day after the NHC highlighted the potential cyclonic activity of area AL95 off the coast of North Carolina, which had a 50% chance of development and eventually evolved into the current tropical storm.

Back in July, Chantal became the third storm of the season, causing swells and heavy rains along the U.S. East Coast, though without significant damage.

Colorado State University projects an active 2025 season, with expectations of 16 named storms, eight hurricanes, and three major hurricanes (category 3 or higher), driven by ocean temperatures exceeding the average.
