U.S. Coast Guard Confirms Death of Third Child Following Miami Boating Accident

Monday, August 4, 2025 by Hannah Aguilar

The United States Coast Guard has announced the tragic passing of a third young victim involved in the boating accident that took place near Hibiscus Island in Miami last Monday. This victim, a 10-year-old girl, had been in critical condition since the incident and passed away at Jackson Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

"Our hearts continue to ache for all those impacted by Monday's tragic event, particularly with today's loss of another young girl from Miami," stated Captain Frank Florio, commander of Miami Sector.

The investigation into the accident, which involved a commercial barge and a sailboat carrying six minors, is expanding with the inclusion of experts from Argentina—home country of one of the victims. Additionally, the National Maritime Authority of Chile has been invited to participate. The Coast Guard has reiterated its dedication to conducting a "thorough and transparent" investigation.

On Monday, July 28, around 11:00 a.m., a barge collided with a small sailboat near Hibiscus Island. The sailboat was carrying five girls, aged between 7 and 13, along with a 19-year-old counselor, all of whom were part of the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation's summer camp.

The collision caused the sailboat to rapidly sink, throwing all six occupants into the water. Emergency crews from various agencies rescued them, although some were trapped under the barge according to initial reports.

Two of the children, Mila Yankeleich, age 7 from Argentina, and Erin Victoria Ko Han, age 13 with Chilean roots, died shortly after being rescued. The third victim, whose identity has not been officially released, fought for several days in intensive care before succumbing to her injuries on Sunday.

Three others survived the accident. An 8-year-old has been discharged from the hospital, an 11-year-old remains hospitalized, and a 12-year-old, along with the 19-year-old counselor, received medical attention on-site without needing hospitalization.

Investigation and Cause of the Tragedy

The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner confirmed that drowning was the cause of death. The Coast Guard, alongside the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), is investigating the incident. Alcohol and drug tests conducted on the operators involved returned negative results.

There is no word yet on whether charges will be filed. Authorities are seeking public assistance and have asked for any videos, photos, or witness accounts to be sent to miamiIO@uscg.mil to aid in clarifying the events.

A safety zone of 250 yards remains in place around the site where the sailboat is submerged.
