Drug Trafficking Network Dismantled in Baracoa: Authorities Seize 71 Hashish Bags and More

Monday, August 4, 2025 by James Rodriguez

A drug trafficking network operating from three houses in Baracoa, Guantánamo, was dismantled in a recent operation where authorities seized 71 bags of hashish. According to the pro-government Facebook page "Guantánamo y su Verdad," the operation, conducted in the Popular Council of La Asunción in Baracoa, also led to the confiscation of large sums of cash, cell phones, and other equipment used in this illegal trade.

Five individuals have been arrested and will face charges for drug trafficking. Despite the legal measures and official narratives, the reality of drug consumption and trafficking in Cuba seems beyond the regime's control. While the government attempts to showcase exemplary actions and legal reforms, the spread of synthetic substances and the deterioration of social structures appear to exceed their capacity to respond effectively.

Last April, Guantánamo authorities reported the detection of over a dozen children and teenagers involved with drugs, either consuming them, even within educational centers, or participating in their possession and sale. Major Alexander Millet Suárez, head of the prioritized sectors group at the National Anti-Drug Directorate in the eastern region, disclosed ongoing monitoring of youths and minors linked to narcotics. Among these were eight children and two adolescents aged 16 and 17, who were admitted to the Pedro A. Pérez Pediatric Hospital and tested positive for drug intoxication.

Additionally, four other minors were "controlled": two for drug consumption, one for possession, and another for trafficking, as specified by the official.
