An 88-year-old woman, previously reported missing in the Camilo Cienfuegos district of Havana, was discovered with injuries after being mugged while wandering disoriented on the streets. Eduarda, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, left her home unnoticed by her family on the night of Saturday, August 2. Her disappearance prompted swift action from the community and social media users, who shared her details and described her outfit: a worn-out orange robe.

She was found hours later by a neighbor who then informed her family. According to accounts shared on Facebook, Eduarda was heading towards Bejucal when an assailant intercepted her in the same neighborhood, snatching her handbag. Fortunately, she wasn't carrying valuables, but she was thrown to the ground and sustained several bruises.

"They knocked her down and she has several bruises. But she's back home now. Immensely grateful," wrote a user named Meli Rodríguez, confirming to activist Yamilka Lafita (known online as Lara Crofs) that Eduarda had been found.

Eduarda's family, including her daughter and son-in-law, publicly expressed their gratitude for the support and solidarity shown by those who helped in the search effort.

Rising Attacks on Elderly in Cuba

This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of elderly individuals in Cuba, particularly those with neurodegenerative diseases, who are becoming frequent targets of crime. According to public complaints, these incidents have become more common in recent months.

The case of Eduarda is not isolated. In recent months, numerous violent attacks against seniors have been reported in various provinces, underscoring a growing pattern of insecurity affecting this vulnerable group.

In September 2024, an elderly man in Havana was shoved to the ground by a young thief who stole his cellphone. In Holguín, two men were arrested for brutally attacking an elderly man with a brick to steal his electric scooter in February of this year. Similarly, in Camagüey, during the same time frame, a woman was kicked during a blackout and robbed of her money and possessions.

These assaults contribute to a rising tide of violence that, according to citizen reports and social media posts, has escalated amid the country's economic crisis. The victims, mostly elderly, endure violent thefts, often without an effective response from authorities.
