Authorities in Tapachula, located in the Mexican state of Chiapas, have apprehended a Cuban man identified as Maels "N" on charges of drug trafficking. The arrest took place on Thursday following the discovery of illicit substances in his possession.
According to the Diario del Sur, Maels "N" was detained alongside a Mexican individual named Heberto "N" on a major street in the Nuevo Mundo 3 neighborhood, situated in the southeastern part of this border city. Tapachula has become a significant hub for migrants, including many from Cuba, seeking to establish themselves in the region.
The police confiscated 13 nylon bags containing a clear substance believed to be "crystal" methamphetamine from the duo. The arrest was made after a K9 unit from the Tapachula Municipal Police detected the suspicious materials during a routine patrol.
Both men, described as having a slender build—one wearing a striped shirt and the other a light blue t-shirt—are now facing charges related to health crimes, specifically in the commercial distribution of drugs.
In a related context, a year ago, three Cuban nationals were also apprehended in Mexico, accused of similar drug trafficking offenses during a police raid in the state of Hidalgo, specifically in the Mineral de Reforma municipality.
In another operation in Tizayuca, a town within the same state, a Cuban man and woman were arrested following a police raid on several nightclubs. This operation resulted in the seizure of over 300 doses of suspected drugs.
Additionally, in Pachuca, law enforcement detained 17 Cuban nationals during an anti-drug operation, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating drug-related activities in the region.
