Amid a severe economic downturn affecting the Cuban populace, the Basic Business Unit (UEB) in Perico, Matanzas, has announced the production of cakes for girls celebrating their quinceañera in July. As stated by the Matanzas Provincial Food Company on Facebook, the initiative aims to provide a "delicious cake for families to enjoy together."

This announcement has sparked mixed reactions. While some see it as a symbolic gesture, others criticize it as a propagandistic move detached from the harsh realities faced by the country. In many Cuban households, essential items like food, medicine, hygiene products, and electricity are scarce, making a birthday cake an unattainable luxury for most.

With numerous families struggling to secure a complete daily meal, the government's attempt to tout cake production as an achievement stands in stark contrast to the scarcity of flour, eggs, milk, and sugar—key ingredients for making cakes. The official post, which mistakenly uses "kake" instead of "cake," has caused outrage. Meanwhile, Cubans continue to endure daily power outages, rampant inflation, and wages insufficient to cover even the most basic necessities. A birthday cake from the regime cannot mask the hunger, discontent, and hopelessness that currently define life on the island.

Quinceañera Packages with "Cake, Ham, Cheese, and Syrup" in Cuban Stores

On July 15, the government of Sancti Spíritus announced that the July basic basket would include sweet surprises for a few lucky individuals able to enjoy cake. In the midst of a food crisis affecting Cubans, Escambray interviewed Ariel Fernández Martín, director of the Commercial Business Group in Sancti Spíritus. He confirmed that starting this month, a food package will be permanently provided to children turning 15.

Available for purchase at a modest price, the package includes: "A cake, sandwich bread, cookies, cheese, cream cheese, a bag of drinks or syrup, a pack of hot dogs, and a kilogram tube of ham." Essentially, the essentials for a birthday celebration. The official noted that 421 teenagers would benefit in July, and the food package was approved as a "national policy for supporting children and youth."

"All items will be controlled through the ration book across retail units in urban, rural, or Plan Turquino areas," he mentioned. The Commercial Registry Offices, based on a census, will manage the list of recipients. Details on whether this food package will be available to all quinceañeras in Cuba or how long the measure will last were not disclosed.
