Cuba Reaches Out to Former MLB Pitcher for World Baseball Classic

The Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) is actively pursuing its plan to bolster the national team by recruiting players with contracts in foreign professional leagues for the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic. As reported exclusively by journalist Francys Romero on his Facebook page, former Major League Baseball pitcher Darién Núñez has been approached and is open to wearing the Cuban jersey in the next Classic.

Núñez, a 32-year-old left-hander, had a brief yet notable stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, along with extensive experience in the Minor Leagues, winter circuits, and the Mexican Baseball League, where he recently signed with the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna. His experience and skill set make him a valuable addition to Cuba's bullpen, particularly due to his precise control and strikeout ability, which have been his hallmark across various platforms.

Building a Team with MLB Stars

The FCB has managed to establish communication channels with several high-caliber players currently active in the MLB, a feat that seemed impossible in the past. Players like Andy Pagés of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Andy Ibáñez of the Detroit Tigers have already agreed to join the initiative, aiming to enhance the Cuban team's competitiveness in international tournaments.

This momentum follows Cuba's performance in 2023, when the team reached the semifinals, marking its best achievement in over a decade, and raising expectations for the next tournament. However, not all players have been receptive; notable figures such as Aroldis Chapman (Boston Red Sox), Raisel Iglesias (Atlanta Braves), and Adrián Morejón (San Diego Padres) have declined the offer.
