A malfunction at Energás Varadero's combined cycle plant led to its removal from the national grid this Monday at noon, decreasing its contribution by 30 megawatts to the National Electric System (SEN) and exacerbating the country's power generation shortfall.

The disclosure came from state journalist José Miguel Solís, who mentioned on Facebook that the unit's capacity was curtailed to merely 60 MW after previously generating over 90 MW before the breakdown. According to Julio Betancourt, the industry's director, the issue lies within the generator's exciter, a crucial component currently under investigation to assess its potential reintegration into the system.

Energás Varadero operates using gas extracted alongside oil, supplied by the Central Drilling and Extraction Company, and has an installed capacity of 100 megawatts. Its infrastructure includes two gas turbines producing 60 MW and a combined cycle generating the remaining 40 MW through a boiler that recycles combustion gases.

The shutdown of this facility signifies an immediate loss of 30 MW compared to its output at the time of the incident, further compounding the severe energy situation faced by Cubans. As the week began, widespread blackouts plagued the nation due to a generation capacity deficit that could surpass 1,700 megawatts (MW) during peak hours on Monday, as reported by the National Electric Union (UNE).

In the midst of this energy crisis, the regime continues its cynical approach by urging citizens to conserve electricity while outages persist for extended periods. This appeal was made on the Isle of Youth, where Yosvany Hernández, director of Commercial Services at the Electric Company, called on the public to lower their consumption, disregarding the hardships already endured by countless families.

Moreover, the regime has lately acknowledged that despite several operational photovoltaic parks, they remain inadequate to meet demand. The UNE warned on Sunday that blackouts would persist across Cuba, even though 23 new solar photovoltaic parks have contributed a total production of 2,892 MWh, delivering up to 568 MW at their peak output.

Understanding Cuba's Energy Challenges

What caused the recent power outage at Energás Varadero?

The outage was caused by a malfunction in the generator's exciter, a critical component being investigated for potential reintegration into the system.

How does Energás Varadero contribute to Cuba's power grid?

Energás Varadero has a 100 MW installed capacity, using gas turbines and a combined cycle to produce electricity, contributing significantly to Cuba's power supply.

What measures has the Cuban regime suggested in response to the energy crisis?

The regime has urged citizens to conserve electricity, although this request overlooks the severe shortages and hardships already being faced by the population.
