The initial batch of Russian UAZ Patriot off-road vehicles has been delivered in Cuba, marking a significant step in the collaboration between the two countries. This was reported by the Russian Embassy in Cuba on Saturday, although they withheld specific details regarding the recipient or the delivery itself. The vehicles are assembled from kits at a Cuban facility, meticulously adjusted to suit the local climate and road conditions.

Furthermore, it was announced that the distribution of the UAZ Pickup model will commence shortly, with an anticipated production capacity reaching 500 vehicles per year. This assembly plant on the island was inaugurated last April during the visit of Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Chernyshenko, to Cuba. During the ceremony, officials from both nations praised the burgeoning industrial ties.

The vehicles were showcased at EISA's booth during the International Transport and Logistics Fair, an event aimed at attracting investments amidst the serious transportation crisis in Cuba. Last year, the Cuban government signed an agreement with Russian company ECHO-Export SRL to assemble and repair UAZ brand vehicles. This initiative was unveiled at the Cubaindustria 2024 exhibition, intended to bolster bilateral economic relations and modernize Cuba's transportation infrastructure, as stated by Miguel Ángel Pedroso Madin, Business Director of Cuba’s Comprehensive Automotive Services Company (EISA).

The agreement initially covers the Patriot and Pickup models, with plans to later assemble light cargo vehicles under the Profi brand. The goal is to reduce imports and directly "improve" transportation in Cuba by leveraging the adaptability of these vehicles across various economic sectors. Russian and Cuban businessmen remarked last year during the agreement signing that the Pickup models could be converted into hearses, addressing one of the most pressing issues in the transportation sector.

UAZ has maintained a presence on the island for two decades and aims to provide after-sales services and warranties to ensure the sustainability and extended lifespan of the vehicles. This will be achieved through the regular supply of Russian parts and components, as explained by Ruslan Ignatyev, Technical Director and Deputy Representative of ECHO-Export SRL.
