As the nation grapples with extended power outages and severe electricity generation issues, the special municipality of Caimanera went ahead with its traditional 2025 Aquatic Carnival this past weekend, set against the backdrop of the Guantanamo coastline. Despite the harsh crisis engulfing the island, the event, organized by the Provincial Council of the Performing Arts and the artistic collective Sobra Talento, drew numerous artists and locals to the Caimanera seawall to witness the floating floats, dance troupes, conga lines, and water shows.

"With all the positive energy that the sea exudes, we had wonderful moments sharing young art and leaving our mark as always," artist Daniela Guilarte Matos shared on social media. The Guantanamo Television station also showcased segments of the carnival, featuring a rather disheveled fashion parade, and hailed it as a "wonderful spectacle" that combined cultural expressions with marine landscapes "to boost community morale."

This celebration in Caimanera unfolds against the backdrop of an unprecedented national energy crisis, characterized by extensive blackouts across the island and widespread public dissatisfaction. According to the Cuban Electric Union (UNE), just last Friday, there was a reported shortfall of nearly 1600 MW during peak hours, forcing authorities to extend power outages in Havana for up to four consecutive hours.
