Raúl Castro Makes Public Appearance at July 26th Event in Ciego de Ávila

Sunday, July 27, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

On Saturday, the elderly Raúl Castro emerged in public for the July 26th event in Ciego de Ávila. Under the watchful eye of his grandson, known as El Cangrejo, and accompanied by fellow nonagenarians Ramiro Valdés and José Ramón Machado Ventura, Castro walked from behind the podium and took a seat in the front row to oversee the proceedings.

The ceremony, marking the 72nd anniversary of the Moncada Barracks assault, once the regime's most significant celebration, commenced around 5 a.m. During the central speech, the Cuban regime's Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz declared that "national dignity is non-negotiable."

In a nation where dissent is suppressed and nearly 1000 political prisoners exist, Marrero emphasized that the regime remains committed to establishing a "fair and democratic" society. Although his speech was filled with the usual regime propaganda and lacked substantive points, Marrero Cruz acknowledged the economic crisis plaguing Cubans, referencing sites visited in Ciego de Ávila while urging workers' enthusiasm and joy.

Drawing on the legacy of the late dictator's ability to "turn setbacks into victories," Marrero highlighted plans for 2026, asserting that the regime will prioritize "increasing national production, acquiring foreign currency, restoring the electrical system, and strengthening the socialist state enterprise" to tackle issues affecting the population's well-being.

Prior to the official ceremony, a cultural gala was held where Lis Cuesta, wife of leader Díaz-Canel, and Yadira Ramírez Morera, partner of Prime Minister Marrero Cruz, were seen in a light-hearted and relaxed manner.
