This troubling event took place on May 27 at a small shopping center in Hialeah, right in front of Nanas Baby Boutique located at 4377 West 16th Avenue.
Eyewitnesses and nearby store owners recounted seeing Garateix yelling at and pushing her child aggressively. "The child was screaming, 'Let me go, let me go, I want my dad,'" described Arelis Guillén, the boutique owner who recorded part of the confrontation.
Guillén further detailed how the situation worsened when Garateix moved the child towards the parking area, where she began screaming, "I want to die, I want to die." Guillén noted, "She grabbed the girl, covering her mouth and nose, while shouting and holding her tightly. The video cuts off when she throws her to the ground because I went out to yell that I was calling the police."
A social worker from a nearby clinic heard the commotion and rushed to the scene, finding the mother disoriented and unresponsive to questions. According to the police report, the child revealed that her mother sometimes "bites her cheek, pushes her, and yells at her."
Resistance and Arrest
Garateix resisted arrest. "She wouldn't let the police put her in the car, then she threw herself to the ground and everything," a witness explained. Her erratic behavior led officers to conclude she wasn't mentally fit for questioning at that time.
A local psychology clinic provided support to both the mother and the child following the incident. Despite the compelling evidence and shocking visuals of the event, Yosvel Águila, Yaslaine's brother, has firmly denied any allegations of abuse by his sister.
The case remains under investigation. Recently, the mother appeared before Judge Mindy S. Glazer to face charges related to child abuse. She also has an immigration hold order.
