Second Car and Train Collision Reported in Ciego de Ávila on the Same Day

Friday, July 25, 2025 by Samantha Mendoza

In the central Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, a modern car suffered significant damage when it was struck by a train in the Maidique area. This marks the second incident of its kind reported in the region on Thursday.

According to citizen reports shared across several Facebook groups, the two individuals inside the vehicle, a Hyundai sedan or hatchback likely from the Accent model range between 2010 and 2016, miraculously emerged unscathed from the collision. This outcome is astonishing given the severity of the crash.

A video posted by Facebook user Alexander Ríos Cruz reveals the car completely overturned, its roof crushed, and showing clear signs of a serious impact next to a partially damaged blue train carriage.

One online commenter remarked, "It's very sad. Drivers must exercise great caution, and even though trains are nearly extinct, one might still come along, leading to such accidents. Respecting the railroad is crucial; although the people were unharmed, the material loss is nearly irreparable these days," highlighting the dire scarcity of rail transportation on the island.

Another user emphasized the importance of road safety, stating, "You have to respect traffic regulations; at a crossing, you must stop and the train should sound its horn, which almost never happens."

A satirical comment noted, "Two accidents happened; it's the 26th, and we must meet the plan," humorously linking the communist celebration date with the occurrence of two such tragic events in the province.

Earlier in the day, a passenger train collided with another car in the Baraguá municipality, also within Ciego de Ávila, with no reported casualties according to preliminary accounts of the incident.

Reports of the accident detailed that the train, identified as engine 50933, was traveling the Baraguá-Ciego de Ávila route when it collided with a privately-owned Hyundai vehicle. The car was attempting to cross the railway when it was struck by the locomotive at the Onelio Hernández crossing, leaving it stranded on the tracks.
