A mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 was felt in various parts of Santiago de Cuba on Tuesday night, as confirmed by officials from the National Seismological Service. The tremor occurred at 10:25 p.m. local time and was recorded by the Cuban National Seismological Network.
Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service and a specialist at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), shared details on social media. He reported that the quake struck at a depth of 14 kilometers, located at 19.89 degrees north latitude and -75.87 degrees west longitude, just south of Santiago de Cuba.
While social media users reported feeling the quake, no injuries or property damage have been noted so far, likely due to the minor magnitude of the event.
Significant Seismic Activity in Cuba During Early 2025
In the first half of 2025, a total of 3,623 earthquakes were recorded in the region, with 3,273 occurring within Cuba's geographical area, according to Arango Arias earlier this month. The most seismically active day was January 27, when 60 quakes were registered within a 24-hour period.
The Pilón-Chivirico area saw the highest number of events, with 1,849 earthquakes, mostly aftershocks from the significant quake on November 10, 2024. Additionally, the Santiago-Baconao region was identified by Arango Arias as the most energetic area during this period, although no major quakes were recorded.
Despite the high number of seismic activities in the first half of the year, only 10 were felt by the population. Nine of these were linked to the plate boundary zone south of eastern Cuba, while the other was a powerful 7.6 magnitude quake north of Honduras, felt in high-rise buildings in the western part of the island.
