Quirky House: Cuba's Most Unusual Building

Nestled in the province of Las Tunas, the Quirky House stands as one of Cuba's most intriguing structures, unique in its kind across the nation. Crafted to challenge common sense with physics and optical illusions, this building delivers an experience that defies gravity and induces sensations never felt before.

Viral Attention from a Cuban YouTuber

Recently highlighted in a video by Cuban content creator Kary Sánchez, the Quirky House has captured widespread attention on social media. Available on her YouTube channel and Instagram account, the video has led many to dub it as "Cuba's most bizarre house."

The mastermind behind this extraordinary space is architect Domingo Alás Rosell, originally from Santiago de Cuba and now residing in Las Tunas. Construction began in 2013, with an investment estimated at 500,000 pesos in both currencies. Alás Rosell ingeniously fuses principles from physics, architecture, and civil engineering, and is also credited with creating the sundial at the Plaza de Las Tunas and the Memorial Caimito del Hanábana in Matanzas, honoring José Martí.

Inside the Quirky House

Visitors entering the house can explore five thematic rooms named after renowned scientists: Galileo Galilei, Pythagoras of Samos, Isaac Newton, Archimedes of Syracuse, and Leonardo da Vinci. Each room is meticulously designed to create optical effects that skew perceptions of balance, verticality, and orientation. The intense sensory illusions have even caused dizziness for some.

The guided tour lasts for 20 minutes, accommodating groups of up to 15 people. Guides explain the fascinating physical phenomena on display, such as water flowing uphill, balls rolling towards the ceiling, and other astonishing illusions.

Globally, there are only 12 such structures. The Quirky House in Las Tunas is a remarkable architectural and scientific anomaly that tests human perception and showcases the power of science as a catalyst for unique experiences.
