A young Cuban woman, who practices the Yoruba religion, has garnered widespread applause on social media after voicing her opinion against charging people seeking spiritual healing through the making of a "santo" for health reasons. In a TikTok video, the woman, known on the platform as Maite Oshun, firmly stated that she wouldn't impose a "spiritual fee" on those dealing with health issues and turning to Santería for relief.

"If I'm called to make a santo for someone dealing with health problems, and it's being done for health reasons... of course, I wouldn't charge any fee. Just five pesos to my Oshún and that's it," she declared.

Although she acknowledges the necessity of money for daily living, Maite emphasized that her spiritual ethics and devotion to the deity Oshún surpass material needs. "No, I'm not wealthy. Of course, one needs money because you know how life is, but I feel that my heart doesn't allow me to do that. I couldn't work on a santo knowing that the person is doing it for health reasons and then charge them a fee."

The practitioner made it clear that she respects others who choose to charge, but insisted her path is different: "I'm not one to criticize anyone's life, but this daughter of Oshún wouldn't do such a thing. And yes, I've worked on several santos where I didn't charge a fee."

Maite Oshun concluded her message by expressing gratitude to her deity for never letting her fall: "The good thing about all this is that my Oshún has always kept me on top, never let me hit the ground. And in one way or another, the ashé and iré always find their way into my home."

Her words have resonated with many users who praised her altruistic and spiritual attitude, especially in these times of economic hardship where faith serves as a refuge for many.

Understanding Yoruba Practices and Beliefs

What is the significance of making a "santo" in Yoruba religion?

In Yoruba religion, making a "santo" is a spiritual ceremony where an individual is dedicated to a specific deity. It is often undertaken for guidance, protection, or healing, and signifies a deep commitment to the spiritual path.

Why did Maite Oshun choose not to charge for spiritual healing?

Maite Oshun believes that charging a fee for spiritual healing, especially for those in need due to health issues, contradicts her ethical and spiritual values. Her dedication to the deity Oshún and her altruistic mindset guide her decision.
