Publix Supermarkets Introduce Kiosks for Quick Vehicle Registration Renewal in Miami-Dade

Residents of Miami-Dade County can now easily renew their vehicle registrations without the need to visit a government office, thanks to the introduction of self-service kiosks in five Publix supermarkets across South Florida. In collaboration with Florida MV Express, the Miami-Dade Tax Collector's Office announced that these kiosks enable users to renew their vehicle tags, print the license plate sticker instantly, and receive a printed receipt, all in under two minutes.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize public services and integrate them into the daily lives of citizens.

Locations of the Kiosks

The kiosks have been installed in five high-traffic Publix locations, chosen for their accessibility and how well they fit into the daily routines of many drivers:

• 15771 SW 152nd Street, Miami
• 20201 SW 127th Avenue, Miami
• 1920 West Avenue, Miami Beach
• 7550 NW 104th Avenue, Doral
• 891 N. Homestead Boulevard, Homestead

Requirements for Renewal

To use the kiosks, drivers must have:

• The PIN number from the renewal notice (received by mail) or the vehicle's license plate number
• The primary owner's date of birth
• A credit or debit card (some locations accept cash)

After following the system's instructions, users can print the new registration sticker, the renewal confirmation, and the payment receipt.

Eligible Vehicles

This service is available for renewing registrations of vehicles that:

• Do not require a new license plate
• Have no insurance, suspended license, or unpaid toll issues
• Do not need a Florida Insurance Certificate
• Do not require IRS Form 2290 (for heavy vehicles)

However, the following cases are not eligible for kiosk renewal:

• Autonomous vehicles
• Boats
• Government vehicles
• Mobile homes
• Custom license plates or National Guard plates
• IRP registrations
• Special parking permits

Cost of Using the Kiosk

Using the kiosk incurs a convenience fee of $4.50 per transaction, plus a processing fee of 2.3% if paid by card. These fees do not include the renewal cost and are collected solely by Florida MV Express. The tax collector's office does not receive any revenue from these charges. However, authorities claim this option is generally cheaper than processing the renewal online or in person, and significantly faster.

Renewal Timeframe

Registrations can be renewed from 90 days before the expiration date up to eight months after. It is important to note that late fees may apply if the renewal is delayed.

A More Accessible Government

Dariel Fernández, the county's tax collector, explained that this initiative aims to make government services more accessible to the community: "Our responsibility is to ensure that government is accessible, efficient, and responsive to the needs of our residents. With these kiosks, we are removing barriers and giving time back to citizens."

Fernández emphasized that Publix supermarkets were chosen as strategic partners for the project because they are frequented daily by thousands of people. He also highlighted that county offices remain open for those who prefer traditional methods or are not comfortable with technology. "For individuals who are not tech-savvy, we continue to offer in-person assistance; they can come in and we will explain the process," he stated.
