Southern Florida is bracing for a heightened risk of flooding from Sunday through Monday night, driven by unstable atmospheric conditions and a potential tropical system brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, according to local meteorologists. Forecast models suggest that rainfall amounts could range from 2 to 4 inches in parts of southeastern Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, with isolated areas possibly receiving over 6 inches of rain.

This situation heightens concerns for flash floods, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Complicating matters is the fact that the ground is already saturated from Saturday's rains. Although southern Florida is currently experiencing severe drought conditions, this type of dry soil tends to drain more slowly, making it easier for flash floods to develop quickly.

Wind Shifts and Slow-Moving Storms

A minor atmospheric disturbance is expected to change wind patterns across the Florida peninsula. On Sunday, a southerly flow is anticipated, gradually increasing shower coverage. By Monday, winds will begin to shift from the north as the disturbance moves over the Carolinas toward the western Atlantic.

This wind pattern, combined with abundant atmospheric moisture and daytime heating, will support the development of localized storms. The worrisome aspect is that these storms will move slowly, increasing the likelihood of sudden and potentially dangerous flash floods.

Cyclonic Potential in the Gulf

Meteorologist Irene Sans from Telemundo 51 reports that this same disturbance is being closely monitored for potential cyclonic development once it moves northward into the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has given the system a 20% chance of tropical development over the next seven days.

While it's too early to predict its exact path or potential land impact, as long as the system remains west of Florida, it is expected to continue drawing tropical moisture over the peninsula, maintaining conditions favorable for more rain and instability.
