Fierce Blaze in Cienfuegos: What We Know About the Incident

Sunday, July 13, 2025 by Albert Rivera

A massive fire broke out on Saturday night at Rancho Luna's Inflatable Park, a recreational area adjacent to the Cienfuegos Dolphinarium, resulting in significant property damage but no reported casualties. Dramatic images shared on social media captured the ferocity of the flames and a towering column of smoke rising from the site.

The swift response of firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other sectors of the tourist complex, according to official reports. Miguel Adrián Rodríguez, a journalist from the 5 de Septiembre weekly, noted that the fire initiated in the land section of the inflatable park, which is operated by the Ministry of Tourism.

This account was corroborated by Yusimí Yull Quintana, a Provincial Party official, who assured that "the iconic dolphins and other wildlife in the adjacent areas were unharmed."

Fire Response and Ongoing Investigation

Subofficer Luis Manuel Valdivié Fonseca, head of the Rescue and Salvage Group, described the blaze as "a significant fire, classified as medium-sized." He mentioned that a potential cause might have been "a strong gust of wind affecting the transformers, possibly causing a short circuit that ignited the fire." However, he emphasized that "the investigation into the causes is still ongoing."

Valdivié also praised the prompt action of the fire brigade, which "cut off the fire's pathways and managed to contain the flames before they reached other areas of the Dolphinarium, including the diving center."

Material Damage and Recovery Efforts

Although no human or marine life was lost, the land area of the park sustained considerable damage. Líosvy Vall-lloseras stated, "The animal area remains undamaged. The dolphins are in perfect condition. So far, no harm has been detected in the aquatic, lifeguard, maintenance, or recreational zones. However, the service area was completely destroyed, necessitating a thorough review."

Tourism sector workers, particularly those from the Dolphinarium affiliated with the Palmares Branch, have commenced recovery operations in the damaged area, which also involves the preparation of dolphin food and other essential resources.

A Beloved Family Destination

Rancho Luna's inflatable park is cherished by Cienfuegos families, especially children and teenagers. Visitors enjoy a natural seaside setting, culinary offerings, and the dolphin performances visible from the building itself.

The Cienfuegos Dolphinarium, situated 17 kilometers from the city, was inaugurated on December 27, 2001. Over nearly 24 years, it has witnessed the birth of four dolphins. Presently, two of these dolphins participate in shows, including "Oceany," who recently turned 18.
