Potential Cyclonic Development Monitored Southwest of the U.S.

Sunday, July 13, 2025 by Madison Pena

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced on Saturday that a broad area of low pressure is being monitored for potential development off the southeastern coast of the United States in the coming days. Although the likelihood of cyclonic formation is currently low, the system could still bring heavy rainfall to Florida and the southeastern coastal regions of the U.S.

According to the latest update from the NHC, environmental conditions might become favorable for the gradual development of this system by the middle or end of the upcoming week. It is expected to move westward across the Florida peninsula and into the eastern and north-central Gulf of Mexico. The chance of cyclonic formation is zero for the next 48 hours, but there is a 20% probability over the next seven days.

However, the meteorological organization warns that, regardless of whether a tropical cyclone develops, increased rainfall is anticipated in several southern U.S. regions, particularly in Florida. These types of systems are typical in July when the Gulf of Mexico waters reach temperatures conducive to cyclonic development, though current atmospheric conditions are still not ideal.

Meteorologists urge residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to stay informed about future updates. On Wednesday, Colorado State University (CSU) released an update on its 2025 Atlantic hurricane season forecast, slightly lowering the numbers but maintaining an alert for above-average activity.

The new report forecasts a total of 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes (category 3 or higher). This is a slight revision from the June forecast, which predicted 17 storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes. The July adjustment comes amid ocean temperatures in the Atlantic that remain significantly above average, promoting cyclone formation, and in the expected absence of the El Niño phenomenon, which typically weakens or disrupts these formations.
