Bedbug Infestation Reported at Santiago de Cuba Psychiatric Hospital

Friday, July 11, 2025 by Michael Hernandez

Alarming reports about the dire conditions at the Gustavo Machín Psychiatric Hospital, commonly referred to as "Jagüa," in Santiago de Cuba have stirred outrage on social media. A video shared widely reveals an elderly patient, frail and motionless, covered by insects crawling over his body, clothes, and bed. The footage, initially posted by journalist Mario J. Pentón, highlights the neglect and unsanitary state of this mental health facility. Despite some laughter from caregivers audible in the video, there is evident concern for the man's well-being, as one person questions whether he had eaten breakfast.

As the video concludes, one individual appears ready to feed the patient, who remains unresponsive in a catatonic state as numerous insects, likely bedbugs, swarm over him. Pentón noted, "The individual who sent me this report is exhausted from seeking help for the patients. They hope these images will at least embarrass the government into taking action." He also expressed gratitude to hospital staff who confirmed the infestation and called for urgent government intervention.

Recurring Pest Problem at the Facility

This is not the first instance of such reports. In July 2024, a CiberCuba exposé highlighted a persistent bedbug infestation at the same hospital. According to the report, both patients and staff had been enduring the infestation's effects for five months without successful eradication, despite the hospital's efforts. The report included photographs that exposed the severe epidemiological issue, shared by journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

Public Outcry and Official Silence

Social media comments reflect the public's pain and frustration over the repeated issue. Many criticize authorities for punishing whistleblowers instead of addressing the problem. Some Cubans state they would rather keep their relatives at home than subject them to institutional neglect.

To date, the Ministry of Public Health has not released any statement regarding this new case of unsanitary conditions in its hospitals. Meanwhile, the "Jagüa" hospital stands as a testament to the crumbling Cuban healthcare system and the lack of basic care for the most vulnerable.
