Cuban Criticizes Mandatory Tips After Poor Service at Florida Restaurant: "The Consequences It Brings"

Wednesday, July 9, 2025 by Emily Vargas

A Cuban man took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with the poor service he experienced at a beachfront restaurant in Hollywood Beach, Florida. He attributed the decline in service quality to the practice of automatically including a mandatory tip in the bill. "Including the tip sometimes leads to poor service," he titled his video, where he shared his disappointing experience at Mamacitas restaurant.

He explained that, although he typically isn't picky about customer service, this particular incident left him baffled. "I understand everyone gets tired. I run my own business, and bad days happen, but this was extreme," he remarked in the video.

In his account, he described arriving at the restaurant with a friend, only to have the waitress hand them the menu and leave without waiting for their order. She returned with a lack of enthusiasm. "She didn't even say 'let me know when you're ready,'" he noted.

The situation worsened when they placed their order. "They brought us the largest fish without giving us a choice. We later realized it was because of the commission. She didn’t ask if we wanted large, medium, or small," he regretted.

He mentioned that a significant amount of food was left uneaten, which he saw as unnecessary waste. However, what frustrated him the most was being forced to pay a mandatory tip despite the unsatisfactory experience. "That's what's happening. They treat you poorly, yet you still have to pay a mandatory tip. I'm not saying it's everywhere, but it's happening," he concluded.

Impact of Mandatory Gratuities on Service Quality in Florida Restaurants

Why do some restaurants in Florida include mandatory tips?

Some restaurants include mandatory tips to ensure their staff receives consistent gratuity, regardless of the service quality or the customer's discretion.

How can mandatory tips affect customer service?

Mandatory tips can sometimes lead to complacency among staff, as they may not feel incentivized to provide exceptional service when gratuity is guaranteed.
