Critical Condition: Child Among Victims of Major Traffic Accident in Ciego de Ávila

Monday, July 7, 2025 by Oscar Guevara

A devastating traffic accident took place on Sunday in Majagua, a municipality in the province of Ciego de Ávila, resulting in a preliminary count of three deaths and 33 injured individuals. Among the injured, three people are in critical condition, including a child whose life is imminently at risk due to severe injuries sustained in the crash.

Dr. Julio Díaz Agramonte, director of the Roberto Rodríguez General Teaching Hospital in Morón, reported that the facility is currently treating eight patients: three in critical condition and three more in serious condition. One of the critically injured is a child suffering from diffuse axonal injury, a traumatic brain injury affecting neuron axons, which are crucial for transmitting nerve signals. The child is currently ventilated but stable. Another child is facing severe complications due to fractures in the tibia and pelvis, having lost significant blood. "The large pelvic fracture has caused significant blood loss, leading to shock. This is why the child is intubated and in a critical state, with life-threatening implications," explained the specialist.

The accident involved a state-owned vehicle from the Empresa de Recursos Hidráulicos, resulting in 33 injuries and three casualties. Of the eight patients transferred to the Roberto Rodríguez Hospital in Morón, six are adults and two are minors. Medical authorities have also reported that, alongside the two critically injured children, a 20-year-old adult is suffering from a pulmonary contusion, right-sided pneumothorax, and cranial fractures.

According to hospital staff, emergency protocols were promptly activated, ensuring the availability of imaging resources, blood supplies, and a comprehensive team of specialists. "Many healthcare workers who were off-duty volunteered to assist due to the severity of the incident," stated Leonel Fuentes Ramos, a specialist in Maternal and Child Nursing.

In addition to the three critically injured, other patients remain serious but stable, with two more under medical evaluation. In total, 25 injured were treated at the Antonio Luaces Iraola Hospital in the main city, while the eight more severely affected were sent to Morón. The highest municipal authorities are present at the hospital, providing support to families and medical staff. The community has also responded compassionately, organizing blood donations for the injured.

This accident adds to a troubling trend of traffic incidents on the island, with recent reports of other serious accidents, including a violent collision on the Vía Blanca in Havana, which resulted in numerous injuries.
