Several children from the Vertientes municipality were admitted to the Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Camagüey after consuming gummy candies that contained marijuana, as confirmed by psychiatry and mental health specialists at the medical facility. This urgent warning was issued by independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada and several concerned mothers in Camagüey, who highlighted that all products under the Kush Queen brand contain psychoactive substances, posing a severe risk to children's health.

The incident has raised significant concerns in the province, as the affected minors exhibited symptoms linked to unintentional drug consumption. In light of the seriousness of the situation, an emergency alert was sent out to parents, grandparents, caregivers, as well as family members abroad and shipping agencies, urging them to meticulously inspect any products intended for children. "Not everything that appears to be a simple candy is harmless," Tan cautioned.

Although no official numbers have been provided regarding the exact count of affected children, the situation has prompted the activation of monitoring and inspection protocols, while investigations into the distribution channels of these products are underway.

Understanding the Risks of Kush Queen Gummies

Kush Queen gummies are cannabis-infused edibles, primarily developed and sold in the United States. This brand has carved a niche in the legal cannabis market by focusing on wellness, health, and relaxation, offering formulations that combine various cannabinoids and terpenes for specific effects, such as stress relief, anxiety management, or pain reduction.

The gummi products may contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chief psychoactive compound in cannabis that induces euphoric states and sensory alterations. They might also include CBD (cannabidiol), which is non-psychoactive and used therapeutically to address anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and pain. Another component could be Delta-8-THC, a cannabinoid with milder psychoactive effects than the traditional THC (Delta-9), which is legal in certain states where Delta-9 is not permitted.

The Impact of Accidental Consumption on Children

These products are not intended for children and can pose a serious health threat if accidentally ingested. Due to their appearance, which closely resembles common candy, the gummies can easily be mistaken for innocent sweets. In children, consuming cannabinoids might lead to dizziness, extreme drowsiness, or loss of consciousness, severe anxiety or panic attacks, nausea, vomiting, and cardiovascular disruptions. In severe cases, it can result in intoxication necessitating hospitalization.
